Pencil Ceramics is a boutique pottery studio in Woodstock, Cape Town, offering a warm, sanctuary-like space where you can slow down and get your hands in clay. Our studio is intimate - classes have a maximum of 8 students - so you receive genuine personal attention rather than being lost in a crowd. When you arrive, you will be welcomed into a light-filled studio at the co-working space Buchanan Square on 60 Sir Lowry Road. You’ll overlook Lions Head and are surrounded by shelves of handmade ceramics and the calming sound of the pottery wheel. You will work directly with either Ellen or Kayla, our experienced instructors, both of whom bring warmth, skill, and patience to every session. What makes Pencil Ceramics unique is our philosophy: we are guided by the Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi, which finds beauty in imperfection and values the process over the result. We are not a production studio - we are a space for mindful making, presence, and genuine craft. Many students describe leaving a session feeling calmer, more grounded, and reconnected with themselves. We combine the precision of German craftsmanship, the philosophy of Japanese ceramics, and the warmth of South African hospitality - and that combination is felt the moment you walk in.

Yes, there is street parking available on Sir Lowry Road and on the surrounding streets in Woodstock. Parking is generally easy to find in the mornings and during the day.  We also have one hour free guest parking in the building. We recommend arriving 5–10 minutes before your session to allow time to find a spot and settle in. If you are coming for an evening session, you can ask our security guards for a parking spot in the co-working complex. As the evenings are often much calmer in the building, there often is sufficient space to park.

Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese philosophy and aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and the natural. It values simplicity, authenticity, and the visible marks of time and making. A crack in a glaze, an asymmetric rim, a texture left by a thumb - in Wabi-Sabi, these are not flaws. They are what make an object alive.  At Pencil Ceramics, Wabi-Sabi guides everything: how we teach, what we value, and what we encourage you to embrace. We do not teach perfection - we teach presence. The goal is not to replicate a shape exactly, but to develop a feel for the material and a relationship with the process. The pieces you make will carry the marks of your hands, and that is exactly as it should be.
